A. VIRU

 

Atko-Meeme Viru, PhD, DSc, is a professor emeritus specializing in exercise physiology at the University of Tartu in Estonia. Graduated at the Faculty of physical education, University of Tartu, Postgraduate course in the Department of physiology, University of Tartu. He earned a PhD from the University of Tartu in Estonia and a DSc from the Academy of Sciences of Estonia.

His investigations examine endocrine functions in muscular activity and adaptation mechanisms in training. He is pioneer in the study of both the fundamental problems and applied questions related to the foundations of training monitoring.  Author of 13 monographs and numerous scientific articles. He has taught several university courses and lectured numerous conferences on specific topics of human physiology and its practical application to sport training.

Broad experience monitoring the training of Estonian elite athletes in different sport events.

Hakkas korrap?raselt sportima 1945 Viljandis Elmar Ardma ja Heldur Tüütsi innustusel. Korvpallis suunasid teda koolivend Raoul üksv?rav, Heino Krevald ja Tartus Edgar Naarits. Eesti noortemeistreid 1949 ja 1950. Oli 1951 üSK/TRü ja Tartu Kalevi meeskonnas NL-i aü-te meistreid, NL-i mv-tel 1951 3., 1952 4. ja 1955 5. ning Eesti koondises NL-i sisemv-tel 1954 4. koha saajaid. 1952, 1956 ja 1958 Eesti mv-te kuld, 1953–55 ja 1957 h?be. ?pingute ajal (1949–51 Viljandis ja 1953–59 Tartus) tegutses spordikooli treenerina (?pilasi Avo Jans, Jüri Viigipuu), juhendas 1957 Tartu Kalevi meeskonda, kes tuli NL-i noortemeistriks. 1955–57 t??tas Tartu 7. kk-i kehalise kasvatuse ?petajana. A-st 1959 TRü/Tü KKT ?ppej?ud, a-st 1974 prof. Olnud 1967–71 spordimeditsiini- ja 1971–92 spordifüsioloogiakateedri juhataja, 1973–89 KKT dekaan, 1992–98 spordibioloogiainst-i spordifüsioloogiaprof, a-st 1998 emeriitprof. Oli 1989–2003 EOK liige (1989–2000 EOK t?itevkomitee liige ja asepresident), a-st 2003 EOK auliige. 1989–2001 oli Olümpiaakadeemia president. Kuulus ENSV Spordikomitee kolleegiumi (1976–83), juhtis Spordikomitee teaduslik-metoodilist n?ukogu (1967–80). Kultuurkapitali kehakultuuri ja spordi sihtkapitali n?ukogu esimees (1996–98) ning Eesti Karskusühingu ja Karskusliidu president (1987–92). Kalevi keskn?ukogu liige.
